Public seminar for young people

1.    A public seminar on the importance of protecting and respecting privacy was held today (29 August) for young people by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“PCPD”).

2.    The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Mr. Roderick B. Woo said, “Young people nowadays like to communicate via the Internet.  Although it’s a fast and convenient way of communication, it may impact on personal privacy.  Once the “Send” button is pressed, unlimited number of messages can be released.  To promote the message of protecting personal data and respecting others’ privacy to the youth, the PCPD has organized this public seminar in the Privacy Awareness Week 2008.  Young people should be careful when providing their personal data on the Internet, and also respect the will of others when disclosing other people’s data.”

3.    The seminar was held at the Lecture Theatre of Hong Kong Central Library.  Mr. Lee Lik Chee, a renowned film director was invited to share his views on creativity and privacy.  Mr. Tang Yu Hang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Sing Tao Magazine Group Limited talked to young people about computer security, including proper ways of storing personal data in USB flash drives.

4.    In the seminar, a newly published booklet, “Protect your personal data while engaging in IT related activities”, introducing computer viruses and privacy, security of USB flash drives, file-sharing software, and safety use of Wi-Fi in simple ways was distributed.  Copies of the booklet are available at the PCPD and it can also be downloaded later from the website of the PCPD (www.pcpd.org.hk).
